Promoting Art in Las Cruces: Noon Friday, April 29, at Main Street Bistro, 139 N. Main St. Promoting Art in Las Cruces, a free monthly series presented by the Doña Ana Arts Council, explores different ways for artists and arts organizations to promote themselves and their events, and gives individuals or groups the opportunity to connect with other members of the arts community. Opening Reception: “Two Steps from the Edge” exhibit opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. May 6 at the El Paso Electric Gallery, Rio Grande Theatre, 211 N. Main St., during Friday night Art Ramble. Refreshments will be served. Featuring watercolor landscapes by Arlene J. Tugel. Most of the works were painted en plein air (painted outdoors) while the artist was standing two steps from the edge of a cliff, arroyo, stream or even a sidewalk. The show runs through May 31. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday, 9 to 5 p.m.
Opening Reception: "Light, Color, Space, Motion" exhibition opening reception from 5 to 7 p.m. May 6 at the Las Cruces Museum of Art, 491 N. Main St., during the Downtown Ramble. The exhibition run through July 16. This two-person exhibition, featuring painter Carlos Estrada-Vega and photographer David Boyd, considers the perception of light, color, space, and motion using three unique approaches.Boyd’s Windowpaneseries depicts single moments in time as though seemingly in motion, resulting in complex, visually stimulating scenes. Boyd’s Shadows series, in contrast, engages the imagination of the viewer by utilizing minimal visual information. Estrada-Vega employs an entirely abstract approach to the consideration of light, color, and motion, presenting color field compositions of various scales. Annual Spring Sale: The Potters' Guild of Las Cruces presents the second annual Spring Sale from 4 to 7 p.m. May 6 and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. May 7 in the Commons area of the St. Paul's United Methodist Church, 225 W. Griggs Ave. Featuring new designs in handmade and wheel thrown pottery, mosaic tile work, jewelry, fiber arts and chemonos. There will be live music at the church during the Friday night Ramble, or visit them on Saturday during the farmers market. They are located just west of Main Street. Artistic Earth Exhibit: Doña Ana Community College student artists present their work through Friday, April 29, in the Cottonwood Gallery, inside Southwest Environmental Center, 275 N. Main St. “The Artistic Earth” features students from all art disciplines at the community college. “Metamorphosis” Show: The show runs through Saturday, April 30, at Nopalito's Galeria, 326 S. Mesquite St. Nopalito’s Galeria presents emerging artist Imelda Chacon in her first art show called “Metamorphosis.” The galeria’s hours are Friday, 4 to 7 p.m., Saturday and Sunday, noon to 5 p.m.
Black Range Artists: “Visions of the Black Range” will be showing at the Unsettled Gallery opening May 14 through June 4. The exhibition is a view of the Black Range Mountains in oil, pastel, watercolor, fiber, clay and metal sculpture. Art demonstrations will be 1 to 3 p.m. May 14 with Rhoda Winters and 1 to 3 p.m. May 21 with Megan Lemcke. Reception will be 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday, May 14. Visions of Our Monument Exhibit: The exhibit will be on display through June 4 at the Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St. Visions of Our Monument: Portraits of the Organ Mountain-Desert Peaks National Monument, by Meg G. Freyermuth features paintings and drawings inspired during artist Freyermuth’s term as Artist-In-Residence for the Organ Mountain Desert Peaks National Monument. Itaa Katsi: Our Life Exhibition: The an exhibition of Hopi art runs through Dec. 17 at University Museum, Kent Hall, New Mexico State University, 1280 E. University Ave. Hopi art exhibition in many forms: as gourd rattles, prints on paper, katsina dolls (katsin tihu), silverwork, wicker and coiled plaques (flat basket forms), headdresses (kopatsoki), clay ceramic vessels, and hand-blown glass figures, among others. El Retrato Nuevomexicano Ahora/New Mexican Portraiture Now Exhibit: The exhibit will run through June 12, with three artists' talks planned for May 12 at 5:30 p.m., and May 15 at 2 p.m. Each talk will take place in the National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum, 1701 Fourth St. SW, Albuquerque. Spring Juried Member Show: Our Living Culture exhibit will be on display through May 21 at Branigan Cultural Center, 501 N. Main St. Comprised of watercolor paintings by more than 20 artists, Our Living Culture showcases the various styles of members of the Southern Chapter of the New Mexico Watercolor Society. NHCC Bilingual Exhibition: National Hispanic Cultural Center Art Museum will be opening a new, bilingual exhibition titled, "The House on Mango Street: Artist Interpret Community," Friday, April 29, with a free, public opening from 6 to 8 p.m. at 1701 Fourth St. SW, Albuquerque. Organized by the National Museum of Mexican Art in Chicago and curated by NMMA’s Visual Arts Director and Chief Curator Cesáreo Moreno, the exhibition features art works inspired by the classic novel "The House on Mango Street," first published in 1984 by award-winning author Sandra Cisneros. The exhibition features more than 75works, including posters and personal effects of Sandra Cisneros such as her desk, typewriter and photographs. “Pushing the Edge” Exhibit: Runs through May 21 at the Tombaugh Gallery in the Unitarian Universalist Church of Las Cruces, 200 S. Solano Drive. Featuring more than 20 fiber artists from the Mesilla Valley Weavers. The theme, "Pushing the Edge," reflects the evolving nature of the group over recent years. This intermediate and advanced class will focus on the unique concerns of each student, working in a variety of media, including watercolor, acrylic, water soluble oil paints, pastels, and colored pencil. Subject matter will comprise of still life, landscape, figure, and architectural space. Students may start classes at any time and proceed at their own pace.
