A mixed-media piece by Levi Howe of Columbus is one of the entries in the annual Ernestine Quick Memorial Art Exhibit and Competition in the Columbus Art Gallery.

COLUMBUS — The skills of area artists are on display and up for judging at an annual event.

The 51 entries in the Ernestine Quick Memorial Art Exhibit and Competition are already available for viewing at the Columbus Art Gallery and will be critiqued Sunday by Lynn Soloway, an art teacher at Concordia University.

Various awards will be given out to the artists whose paintings and sculptures are deemed the best by the judge. Awarded will be best in show, first and second places, as well as a few honorable mentions. The public can also get in on the judging by casting votes for the people’s choice award.

The entries are all two- or three-dimensional pieces created by Nebraskans, some of whom are professional artists and others who are just dabbling in the arts, said Lisa Rosendahl, visual arts director at the gallery.

The public is invited to view the artwork during gallery hours, which are noon-5 p.m. Monday-Thursday, noon-4:30 p.m. Friday and 1-4:30 p.m. Saturday. The Sunday reception and awards presentation is also open to the public and free. It will be held from 2-4 p.m. in the gallery, located in the lower level of Columbus Public Library.

The reception is being hosted by the Columbus Women’s Club and the exhibit is sponsored by Jeannie Kiser in memory of her mother, Margie Kiser.

Artists 18 and older from across Nebraska and surrounding states are invited to take part in the competition. The exhibit has featured a variety of artwork including mixed media, acrylics, pastels, pottery, sculptures and oil paintings. The pieces will be displayed until Feb. 27.

The competition was started by the gallery’s first preparator, Robert Quick, who worked at the gallery from 1983-87. His job consisted of arranging, hanging and lighting all the art shows. He gave a memorial to the gallery in a tribute to his late wife, Ernestine Quick, who was an artist. The show was created and named in her honor.

Entries for next year’s competition are being taken. Anyone interested in submitting a piece of work can receive an entry form by calling Rosendahl at 402-563-1016 or sending an email to [email protected].
